Sahara Sandboarding in Merzouga
Duration
Group size
Your experience begins with the journey from Marrakech toward the Agafay Desert. As you leave the city, busy streets gradually give way to open countryside and the dry landscapes southwest of Marrakech.
The scenery becomes increasingly rugged as you approach Agafay, with rolling rocky hills and broad open spaces stretching toward the horizon. On clear days, the distant Atlas Mountains create an impressive backdrop.
After arriving in Agafay, you'll meet the camels and prepare for the experience.
Before setting out, you'll be shown how to comfortably mount and sit on the camel. You may also have the opportunity to wear a traditional scarf, adding a Moroccan touch to the experience and providing a great opportunity for photographs.
Once everyone is ready, the camel caravan begins its journey into the surrounding landscape.
Set off across the rocky desert landscape at the calm, steady pace of your camel.
The route takes you through open terrain surrounded by the distinctive hills and plains of Agafay. Unlike the large golden dunes of the Sahara, Agafay is a stone desert characterized by rugged scenery, earthy colors, and expansive views.
The slower pace gives you plenty of time to appreciate the landscape and enjoy being away from the activity of Marrakech.
During the experience, take time to capture photographs of the camels and the surrounding desert scenery.
After the ride, relax with a traditional glass of Moroccan mint tea and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of Agafay.
It's an opportunity to rest, appreciate the landscape, and experience a small part of Morocco's famous hospitality before beginning the return journey.
After completing your camel experience, leave the peaceful landscapes of Agafay and begin the journey back toward Marrakech.
Watch the scenery gradually change as you approach the city, returning from the open desert surroundings to the lively streets of Marrakech.
The relatively short distance between Agafay and the city makes this experience easy to enjoy within a morning or afternoon while still leaving time for other activities in Marrakech.
Agafay is a rocky desert rather than a traditional sand-dune desert like the Sahara around Merzouga. Its appeal comes from its rolling arid hills, wide-open landscapes, proximity to Marrakech, and views toward the Atlas Mountains on clear days.
Comfortable clothing and closed shoes are recommended for the camel ride. Sun protection and sunglasses are particularly useful during warmer months, while an extra layer can be helpful for early-morning or late-afternoon experiences during cooler periods.
Camel riding is generally a relaxed activity, but getting onto and off a camel involves noticeable movement as the animal stands up and sits down. Always follow the instructions provided during the experience.
